About the event

The Ashtanga second series, also known as "Nadi Shodhana" or "Intermediate Series," builds upon the foundation established in the Primary Series. It delves deeper into challenging postures and advanced sequences, offering practitioners an opportunity to refine their practice and explore new realms of physical and mental discipline. Here's an overview of what you might expect in the Ashtanga second series:

  1. Opening Sequence: The second series begins with a set sequence of Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskara A and B) to warm up the body and establish a connection between movement and breath.
  2. Backbends and Hip Openers: The intermediate series places a strong emphasis on backbends and hip-opening postures to increase flexibility and strength in these areas. Poses like Kapotasana (Pigeon Pose), Eka Pada Sirsasana (Foot Behind the Head Pose), and Dhanurasana (Bow Pose) are commonly included.
  3. Arm Balances and Inversions: Advanced arm balances and inversions are introduced to cultivate upper body strength, balance, and focus. Poses such as Pincha Mayurasana (Forearm Stand), Bakasana (Crow Pose), and Eka Pada Koundinyasana (One-Legged Sage Koundinya's Pose) may be incorporated.
  4. Leg-behind-the-head Poses: The second series features challenging leg-behind-the-head postures to increase flexibility in the hips and hamstrings. Examples include Eka Pada Sirsasana (One-Legged Headstand Pose) and Yoga Nidrasana (Yogic Sleep Pose).
  5. Advanced Seated Poses: The seated sequence of the intermediate series includes a variety of advanced postures that require deep concentration, balance, and control. Poses such as Bhujapidasana (Shoulder-Pressing Pose), Kurmasana (Tortoise Pose), and Supta Vajrasana (Reclining Thunderbolt Pose) may be included.
  6. Finishing Sequence: Similar to the Primary Series, the second series concludes with a specific sequence of seated and supine postures, followed by relaxation and meditation. This helps to balance the body and calm the mind after the intensity of the practice.
  7. Guidance and Modification: It's important for practitioners to approach the second series with caution and humility, as it contains more challenging postures that require careful alignment and preparation. Students should work closely with a qualified Ashtanga teacher who can offer guidance, adjustments, and modifications based on individual needs and abilities.

The Ashtanga second series offers a profound journey of self-discovery and transformation, inviting practitioners to deepen their practice both physically and spiritually. With dedication, patience, and perseverance, students can gradually progress through the series, unlocking new levels of strength, flexibility, and awareness along the way.
